Redeemer Serves Our Neighbors: Sleep In Heavenly Peace
This past week, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lawrence, Kansas was blessed to put hands and hearts to a simple work of mercy, we helped build 16 beds for children who do not have a bed of their own through Sleep in Heavenly Peace. The task was practical, measuring, sanding, drilling, assembling, but the meaning was profoundly human. A bed is not a luxury for a child. It is a place of safety, rest, and dignity. And for many families, that basic need is still unmet.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace exists for a focused purpose, volunteers build, assemble, and deliver beds to children and families in need, guided by the motto, “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” That mission fits beautifully with the Church’s calling to love our neighbor in concrete ways. Christian mercy is not theory. It is care that touches real life, in real homes, for real people.
For Redeemer, this kind of service is not separate from worship, it flows out of it. We confess that Holy Scripture is the Word of God, and therefore we believe, teach, and confess the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We also confess that Christian life is shaped by Christ’s gift of salvation, and that gift trains the heart to give freely, not to earn God’s favor, but because His favor has already been given in Christ. In other words, good works do not create faith, faith produces good works, and mercy becomes a natural fruit of the Gospel.
That is what made this bed build so encouraging. People showed up. Tools came out. Boards turned into frames. Piles of lumber became something durable and useful. And as we worked, there was the kind of fellowship that forms when Christians serve side by side. We may not all have the same skills, but everyone can contribute something, strength, attention, patience, organization, encouragement. That shared labor is one of the quiet joys of congregational life.
